On the hill above the Lim Channel, lies the municipality of Tinjan, known for its long tradition of producing top Istrian prosciutto. In Tinjan you can find beautiful renovated stone houses, a large selection of building land, as well as agricultural land for sale.
Tinjan used to be a small town on the border. In Roman times, the then Attinianum guarded the borders of the Poreč ager towards the insufficiently Romanized interior of the Istrian peninsula and controlled the road to Tarsatica. In the Middle Ages, it became one of the mainstays of the Pazin estates of Majnard of Montenegro and, together with the Pazin Castle, a marriage bond, came under the rule of the Counts of Goričko. To them, the Tinjan fortress guarded the often attacked western border to the possessions of the Patriarch of Aquileia, just as from 1374 until the arrival of Napoleon to its new owners, the Habsburg imperial family, guarded the hot border of Pazin County to the possessions of Venice.
Although located on the border, Tinjan was not just an ordinary fortress, but since 1578 it has been called a city. Today, Tinjan is an environment that proudly preserves its history and tradition, whether it is the symbols of this region, stone dry stone walls and ponds and kosirs and ranks, folklore and architectural heritage, tradition and legends or top gastronomic delicacies such as Istrian prosciutto.
Today, the tradition of producing top-quality prosciutto in the Tinjan region is preserved by several registered prosciuttos, and in 2006 Tinjan was proclaimed the Municipality of Istrian prosciutto. Another significant tradition of this region is the blacksmith's trade, and Tinjan's blacksmiths are widely known, so on the feast of Šimunj in Tinjan, a festival of blacksmiths and other blacksmith's products from blacksmiths from all over Istria is traditionally held.
